On the evening of October 20, 2025, we lost a very unique man who could entertain, inform, and irritate all in the space of a minute. He was highly intelligent, but never arrogant or condescending, with a good sense of humor. He could discuss any topic knowledgeably.
Born in California on July 23, 1951, he was adopted by John and Mary Sue Preston and immediately moved to Pontiac, Michigan. He received his BS and MS degrees in geology from Michigan State University. Upon graduation, having dozens of job offers he opted for Tenneco Oil in Oklahoma City, OK. He had several positions after that, finally becoming the VP of U.S. operations for Carlyle Petroleum, a Canadian Crop. He commented that he was tired of making money for "everyone else" and made the leap to an independent. After a slow start he began his rise to success, finally enjoying the fruits of his labor. He also enjoyed many friendships, those of whom described him as very smart, interesting, honorable, and an all around good guy.
The world has lost one of it's best.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggy L. Schultz.
As per John's request there will be no memorial service.
In lieu of flowers please make donations on John's behalf to one of the following: Paws of War and Free to Live (links below) and also the Wildcare Foundation at https://www.wildcareoklahoma.org/donate/
