Ligia Barona affectionately known as “Elitas”, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2026, in Norman Oklahoma, surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Armero Tolimo Colombia to Pedro Gonzalo bustos and Isaura Quiñones, she grew up surrounded by love- a sentiment that became the greatest legacy of her life, which she nurtured and multiplied among her 15 children, 24 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.
From a young age, she was a courageous, hardworking woman of great strength. She fondly recalled her days in the countryside, where she would harvest crops, ride horses with skill, and help her parents prepare meals for the workers on the family farms. Life presented her with one of its most difficult challenges when she was widowed at the age of 40. Yet, with limited resources, tireless effort, and an unshakeable will, she raised her children on her own. She washed, ironed, and fought without rest, proving that a mother’s love can overcome even the greatest adversities. She was, without a doubt, a true warrior of life.
Elitas was more than just a strong woman; she was also joyful, cheerful, generous, and a dreamer. She loved music, plants, and above all, life itself. In 1996, she arrived in the United States and found a new home in Oklahoma, where she lived for the rest of her days. Her plants, which she tended to with such care, always reminded her of her beloved Colombia and her roots. Elitas leaves an indelible mark on her family and on the countless friends who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be remembered for her strength, her generosity, and her joy, and above all, for the immense love she gave to those closest to her. Her life was a story of struggle, courage, and love. Her example will endure forever among the generations who carry a piece of her in their hearts.
Rest in Peace dear Elitas. Your story will live on in all of us.
