Susan Elizabeth (Hackney) Kulina

May 7, 1946 — April 28, 2021

Oklahoma City

Susan “Sue” Elizabeth (Hackney) Kulina passed away the morning of April 28, 2021 of natural causes.

Sue was born May 7, 1946, in Detroit, MI, to William Hackney and Helen Anderson. Sue was a giving person who loved connecting with people to provide assistance or simply comfort when someone was in need.

At a young age, the family moved to Indianapolis, IN, where Sue graduated from the Tudor Hall School for Girls (now Park Tudor School). She married Peter S. Schmidt and attended Ball State University in Indianapolis. The couple then moved to Tulsa, OK, where she attended the University of Tulsa. They later moved to Saint Louis, MO, where she received her RN license from the Barnes School of Nursing. In 1980, the family moved to Houston, TX.

After a fulfilling nursing career, Sue worked at Clear Channel as a receptionist for nearly ten years. Sue called Houston home until 2011 when she moved to Midwest City, OK to be near her daughter.

She enjoyed cooking, reading, visiting with friends, and walking her dog. Later in life she enjoyed crafting and playing (especially when she won) bingo. Her favorite memories were the many happy years spent raising her two children and cooking during the holidays.

During the last year of her life, she resided at John H. Johnson Care Suites in Oklahoma City, where she made many friends among the staff and other residents.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hefton and husband Sam Hefton of Edmond, OK; son, David Schmidt of League City, TX; grandson, Jaden Schmidt; former spouse Peter S. Schmidt of Santa Rosa, CA; former spouse, James Kulina of Houston, TX.
