Betty Lou (Sowards) Silling

Betty Lou Silling Sowards, 93 of Edmond, Oklahoma was born October 16, 1926, in Huntington, West Virginia to Henry Cesco Sowards and Esther Mae Scott Sowards.  Betty passed away on February 17, 2020 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Betty married her sweetheart, James Williamson Silling on November 22, 1948.  Betty was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Edmond.  Betty was a loving mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren called her Grannie and that gave her great pleasure.  She was a homemaker and at times worked part time in children’s retail at Dillard’s and Tammy Lynn’s in Oklahoma City. She enjoyed volunteering at the hospital when they lived in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Betty and James loved to square dance and she enjoyed aerobics at the senior center. Betty and her husband lived in many states and travel throughout the county.  One of their favorite trips was to Oregon, which she and James took while researching their genealogy.  Another of her favorite memories was a trip to Ireland with her daughter Cindy. Few would know, but may not be surprise that Grannie also enjoyed bowling and roller skating in her senior years.

For the past four years, Betty lived at the Fountains of Canterbury in Oklahoma City.  Betty’s family would like to thank them for their compassionate care. They would also like to thank Mercy Hospice for their support to Betty’s needs during her final weeks.

Her survivors include her children and spouses: Cindy Deatherage and Randy Deatherage of Virginia. Jane Moody and Craig Moody of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Grandchildren: Travis Deatherage, Stacey Schanzer, and Blake Deatherage, Kimberly Park and Patrick Moody.  Great grandchildren: Taylor Deatherage, McKenna Deatherage, Isabelle Schanzer, Alexandra Schanzer, Henry Joseph Park, and Hazel Marie Park.

Betty is preceded in death by: James Williamson Silling, husband, Ida Mae Sowards Szilagyi, sister, Henry Cesco Sowards, father and Esther Mae Scott Sowards, mother.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 12:30 PM at OK Cremation Funeral Home Chapel, 2415 N. Walnut Ave., Oklahoma City. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
