Carey Bruce McCarty

June 17, 1971 — July 3, 2021

Midwest City

Carey Bruce McCarty, Midwest City resident, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 50.

Carey was born June 17, 1971 in Phoenix, AZ to William “Bill” and Deanne “Dee” (Schamahorn). After high school, Carey enlisted in the US Army and served his country during Operation Enduring Iraqi Freedom. During his enlistment, Carey received several medals, badges and citations. He received an honorable discharge on Dec. 12, 2003.

Carey later began working as a mechanic and received several citations from work at LSI/EG & G and Vinnell Arabia. He enjoyed computer gaming, watching documentaries, and reading anything about history, particularly military history.

He was an avid fan of F1 and racing, goth, metal, and reggae music. He loved watching comedy shows especially ones with Dave Chappelle. Carey was a self-confessed troublemaker as a kid with a natural penchant for misbehaving (never maliciously of course) but liked to think the Army straightened him out. He was friendly and outgoing, charming (girls loved him), bold and confident (not at all shy about sharing his opinions) and always acknowledged and greeted people

Carey has traveled the world, both as a soldier and after he left the service, taking time to experience local culture, meet new people and try new things, even though he’s not a fan of the heat and humidity, and so had an expanded worldview. He was funny and had a witty take and often humorous observations about people and things. He had a knack for putting people at ease with his stories and jokes

"He was a perfectly imperfect person who wrestled with God, but like the prodigal son ultimately came home to be with the Father. And even though he professed that I’d met him when he was no longer at his “peak physical condition”, I always thought that I had him at his best as a person as he'd already been shaped by his life experiences and because he never failed to make me feel loved and prioritized.

Carey was a loving husband and father, a son, a brother, and a loyal friend. He is many things to different people but most significantly — he was loved, and he will be missed." - Marj

Survivors include his wife, Marj; father, Bill, mother, Dee, daughters, Megan, and McKenna; brothers, Ricky and Michael, best friends, Jason, Raymond and Richard and a host of family and friends.
