Derek DeWayne Shaw

July 5, 1958 — April 22, 2021

Oklahoma City

Derek DeWayne Shaw, was born to the late Leon Everett Shaw Sr., and Dorothy Mae Bradford in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on July 5, 1958.  He accepted Christ at an early age and he whole heartedly believed and trusted in the Lord. Derek attended Oklahoma City Public Schools and graduated from Fredrick Douglass High School in 1976.

Derek honorably served his country and was a proud Veteran of the United States Army National Guard and Army Reserves, until he retired as a Sergeant. During his military career he received many awards and certificates for his outstanding service, and participated in the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm, as a solider.

Derek lived his life to the fullest and was affectionately known as “Drake.” He had a few hobbies, but his love of gardening, fishing, cooking, traveling, NASCAR races and western movies topped the list. Drake also enjoyed spending time with family and friends in the “Lot.”

On April 22, 2021, the Lord called him from labor to restful reward. Derek was preceded in death by his parents, Leon Sr., and Dorothy Mae; and three siblings, James Bradford, Patricia Berryhill and Carolyn Shaw. His life will be fondly remembered by his two beautiful daughters JaMika Thompson-Robinson (Ethan) and Darrieyl Nelson (Gabriel) of Midwest City, Oklahoma; five sisters, Jacqueline Davis (George) of Midwest City, Oklahoma; Joyce Jones (Larry) and Barbara Bradford of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Debra Chisholm (Clarence) of Purcell, Oklahoma; and Lorna Shaw of Midwest City, Oklahoma; two brothers Glenn Shaw and Leon Everett Shaw Jr., of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his lovely Aunt Eulila Davis; best friends, Ray Haywood and Tony Chappel; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We are eternally grateful for everything that he was to us in life and everything his memory will continue to be as we carry his legacy with us always.
