James Buford McGuire

August 14, 1952 — February 4, 2021

Yukon

James B. McGuire, 68, of Yukon, Oklahoma passed away on February 4, 2021, after a period of good health and mental soundness. His spirits were brightened in the days preceding his death by the phone conversations he was able to have with family members. The family rejoices in this good news.

Born to C.T. “Pete” and Betty McGuire on August 14, 1952 in Marshall, Texas, James spent much of his childhood visiting Karnack at the “Lake House,” chasing dragonflies among the willowy Caddo cypress trees. James attended Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City and it was there that he picked up a guitar for the first time. He also met the love of his life, Jennell Howe McGuire, during these early years, and they were married on May 18, 1974. James went on to teach biology at Putnam City North High School until he retired in 1990. The pride and joy of his life were his two daughters, and their childhood was filled with trips to the park, art projects, and lots of funny stories to be passed down one day.

James is survived by his lifelong love Jennell, his two daughters Audrey Willett and Meghan Mansfield and their husbands, 9 grandchildren, brothers John and Jerry McGuire, sisters Mary New and Martha Boswell, and mother Betty McGuire. He is preceded in death by his father.

Throughout his life, James established himself as an immensely talented poet, musician, and artist. His guitar brought many people together over the years. His charming smile, twinkling eyes, quick-witted mind, and intelligent humor made him a friend to everyone he met. He enjoyed playing hymnal music for many churches throughout the years, and most people knew James to have a guitar in one hand and a notebook with a good pen in the other hand. He often sang of yearning to be reunited with his Heavenly Father one day. As James himself said, “The Kingdom of Heaven is near.” Though the family mourns his absence, we know that James is resting in the safest place of all.
