Kimberlyn "Cookie" G. Lara

January 9, 1977 — July 10, 2020

Kimberlyn Lara, who we affectionately called “Cookie”, passed from this life to join the Lord on Friday, July 10th, 2020.  She was born to Ivan and Rosy Lara in St. Anthony's Hospital in Oklahoma City on Sunday, January 9th, 1977.

When one describes Cookie, the one word that comes to mind is loving, as Cookie loved on everyone she interacted with. In her time with us, she had been living with her parents and attending the Dale Rodgers Training Center, which supports people with disabilities through vocational training, in house programs, and work opportunities. She would look forward to working every day and never wanted to miss a moment. Every morning she would look at her mom and say “Bye Rosy, I love you” and at the end of the day when she returns she would say “Hi Rosy, how was your day?”.

She was a part of a family and felt pride going to Dale Rodgers. She loved to see her teacher Kristin and even before she had a tremendous fondness for her previous teachers, Deborah and Shirley.  Kristin had a dependable companion with Cookie, whether it was helping her friends move around in a wheelchair, or delivering mail, she took pride in her work. Often calling it “her office”, she would complete the tasks she loved. Cookie also enjoyed cooking class and loved to sit outside in the garden area when the weather was nice and do gardening.  With all the different activities Cookie was involved with, she most looked forward to the monthly parties. Cookie loved to dance to hits from the 80’s and would love to spend time with her great group of friends like Lisa, John as well as the rest of her crew with Emily, Minnie, Jason and Kenny.  It’s friends like the ones Cookie had in her life that made life fulfilling.  I am sure there were times Cookie would note this in her journal.  She would tell her teacher Kristin it was her story, and even though it may be a few scribbly lines, what matters was it made sense to her after all.  Towards the end of each day when asked, “Who is going to pick you up today Cookie?” she would smile so happily and say “Ivan”, she always looked forward to her time with her father. Her father always made her smile and laugh. The love of her parents made Cookie safe and happy.

At home, Cookie’s favorite things to do were to watch movies and play her music. She was a child of the 80’s, so actors such as Tom Hanks and Chevy Chase always brought a smile to her face.  A long list of movies like, “Big” and any of the “Vacation” films provided hours of entertainment.  When she played music, you would be sure to hear Michael Jackson’s “Beat it”, or “Billie Jean” or even any 80s songs from KOMA, sometimes too loud, playing throughout the house.  Her parents knew this is what made her happy.

She was a true angel. While her time on this earth is done, there is no doubt she will live on in our hearts until the day we see her again.

Cookie is survived by her parents, Ivan and Rosy.  By her brothers Bryant and Randy, and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
