Melva Jean (Ferguson) Canon

February 11, 1953 — September 26, 2020

Oklahoma City

On September 26th , 2020, Melva Jean Canon passed from Earth into eternal life.

Born on February 11th , 1953 to Melvin and Onedia Ferguson, Melva spent the first one-third of her life living in Ardmore Oklahoma, her place of birth. On December 22nd , 1979, Melva married Michael Canon of Blanchard, Oklahoma, with whom she bore and raised three children. The Canon family made a home in Bridge Creek Oklahoma, where all three kids attended from kindergarten and graduated. Melva worked for many years as an insurance adjuster at American Fidelity until she became permanently disabled, at which point she took up the full-time job of being a stay-at-home mom, classroom mother, cub scout pack leader, team mom, band and football booster member, and foil to her children speeding, skipping school, and peeling out of the parking lot of the local gas station. Melva faced many medical difficulties throughout her life but was always there for friends and family, all-the-while smiling through the pain. Melva was present to see all of her children become successful in their chosen careers, as she watched from the sidelines with pride. In 2012 Mike retired from Putnam City Schools and they were able to begin enjoying more time together and grandsons Sawyer Davis Emerich & Finn Matthew “Tornado” Emerich. Known as NeeNee, Melva loved baking cookies for the boys and searching for obnoxious toys to send home for a little revenge against Cortlyn for the particularly difficult teenage years. Unfortunately, Carlin & Clayton do not have children so Cortlyn bore the brunt of the “paybacks.” Melva enjoyed watching Sooner Football & Basketball, Thunder Basketball, reality television, and fishing.

Melva was preceded in death by father and mother, Melvin and Onedia Ferguson, father and mother-in law Carl and Ethel Canon, siblings Fayedell & Tiny Arnold and John Ferguson, among other dear family and friends.

Melva is survived by her husband, Michael Canon, children Carlin and Clayton Canon, and Cortlyn Emerich, son-in-law Matthew Emerich, and grandsons Sawyer and Finn Emerich, brother and sister-in-law Adron and Lana Canon, niece Katie Hulet, great-nieces and nephew Kylea, Paisley, and Tyler Hulet, nephew Mel Arnold, niece Tracey Moore, great-nieces and nephew Kristen Poslik, Rheagan Moore, and Brent Arnold, cousins Dennis Teague, Wife, & children and Cindy Keele, Husband, & children, brother & sister by-love, Wayne and Mary Ann Hall, children-by-love Wayne Jr. & Keely Hall , Kristy & Craig Marshall, and Kalli & Jonathan Castille, and grandchildren-by-love Aaliya Burkeen & Kalana Hall, Tyrone & Oliver Marshall, and Kouper Campbell, Samantha, Vincent, & Hatti Castille.

The family would love any and all flowers and plants but also welcome donations on Melva’s behalf of new art supplies, books, and hand sanitizer to Overholser Elementary or Yukon Middle School, as some of her passions include arts & crafts, reading, and making sure that Cortlyn and Clayton’s students were taken care of.
